Volume 1: Legend of the Magatama

At the peak of the Heian Era, famine and disease tear the country apart. Deadly assassins fill the court, and wild bandits infest the country side. The legendary samurai Minamoto is sent on an Imperial quest for an artifact that can restore the world. But his skill with the bow cannot save him from illness, and his young sister is forced to take his place. Hikaru Minamoto and her companions embark on a quest to find the Magatama to bring new life to Japan. Her survival in the emperor's court depends on keeping her true identity hidden.

Volume 1: Legend of the Magatama details

Act 1: Raikou

The episode opens with Hikaru ( already in the guise of her brother, Raiku and her companion, retainer, Tsuna already being ambushed by the Tsuchigumo warriors.

Act 2: Sadamitsu

Continuing on their quest for the missing Magatama, Hikaru and Tsuna arrive at a small village on their way to the land of Hitachi. Here they come upon a young man named Sadamitsu, who is allowed to live in the village…as long as he does not interfere… and we later find out that Sadamitsu is the only surviving warrior of of the Imperial Army.

Act 3: Tsuchigumo

Episode Three brings Hikaru and Tsuna, now accompained by Sadamitsu to the hideout of the Tsuchigumo clan, and into battle for the missing Magatama. Defeating the leader of the Tsuchigumos, the trio return to the capital, where Hikaru learns of the death of her brother.

Act 4: Rashomon

Rashomon finds Hikaru grieving for her brother Raikou, using the excuse of cleansing herself thru Monoimi. In the meantime, there are rumours of a Demon in Rashomon, rumours spread by Seimei. Hikaru goes to Rashomon, for seclusion and to mourn the loss of her brother without interruption, but finds herself not alone…for Mansairaku hears Hikaru's flute, the sound so sad that it draws him to her. In episode 4 of Otogi Zoshi, we see Mansairaku's dance in a much more complete view, where he begins to dance in a traditional ancient Japanese style to Hikaru's flute. This triggered a certain connection between the two, such as Yin to Yang. Following this, Mansairaku would save Hikaru from warriors of the Capital who had misunderstood who they were. Mansairaku would later meet Hikaru again after she had been attacked by random soldiers under Shutendouji, who had seemed to want to rape her after finding out that she had been a woman, not a man.

Act 5: Urabe

Urabe adds another member to the party on it's quest for the Magatamas…Urabe assigned as a guide for Hikaru and her group, leads the group on its mission to the land of Noroi Jima.

Act 6: Noroi-Jima

The clan reunites after being separated; Sadamitsu picks up boy named Kintaro. Kintaro afterwards joins up with Raikou and the others, and assists them within the attack of Shutendouji's main castle.

Overview of Tokyo Chapter

Starting from episode 14, Otogi Zoshi enters its second story arc: a new chapter set in present-time Tokyo is about to begin.

Tokyo, 2004... Hikaru is a 17-year-old high school student. Both of her parents are deceased, leaving her the landlady of their apartment housing called Minamoto Heights. While her tenants include unique characters such as the freelance writer Tsuna, the weird fortuneteller Urabe, and the pimp Sadamitsu - who has a gluttonous little boy named Kintaro. Her older brother, Raiko, has been found to be missing for about a year now.

One day Hikaru happens to see her missing brother in the busy city of Tokyo, but Tsuna - who was with her at the time - apparently didn't. Was it really him?

After this unexpected sighting, many people around her start to disappear, almost as if they had been spirited away. Something really strange is about to happen in Tokyo...
